Air Asia X A330-343X 9M-XXE returns to Perth after number 1 engine fails en-route to Malaysia

Air Asia flight XAX237 operated by A330-343X 9M-XXE c/n 1075 departed 07.10hrs Perth Airport this morning for Kuala Lumpur, when approx 1hrs.50minutes into the flight, according to passengers on board heard a "bang" come from the aircraft's number #1 engine, then a shuddering of the aircraft resulting in the shut down of the engine & the aircraft returning to Perth Airport.

The A330-343 touched down on RWY21 at 09.57hrs (as seen here above) incident free, although passengers were in the 'brace position' for landing. 

Fire & emergency vehicles were placed on standby as a precautionary measure as requested by the flight crew.

The aircraft taxied to ITB 154 where the aircraft was to be further inspected by engineers & passengers off loaded some time later.

A re-scheduled relief flight 'XAX 688' operated by A330-343X 9M-XXW c/n 1596 arrived into Perth at 20.06hrs later tonight to uplift those stranded passengers from this morning's flight & departed at 23.40hrs returning to Malaysia as flight 'XAX689'.
